Job description

As part of a cross-department initiative, the department of Engineering Mechanics announces a postdoc position within the thematic area Advanced Computing and Machine Learning on the topic of “Modelling fibre suspension flows using isogeometric analysis”.

The purpose of the project is to attain unprecedented accuracy and efficiency in modelling fibre suspension flows for forming applications and connect the results to structural simulations of the formed networks and composites. We will do it by engaging isogeometric analysis in modelling fibres and fibre interactions.

Fibre suspensions are the initial phase for many products such as paper or moulded composites. Controlling the density fluctuations and the orientation distribution is vital for achieving the target properties of the material. For example, in papermaking, the process starts from a dilute suspension and ends with a dry sheet that is essentially a network of bonded fibres. The paper sheet structure is defined by the flow and dewatering conditions in the forming section and is also affected by the chemistry. These factors must therefore be accounted for in the modelling framework.

The aim is to extend existing tools for multiscale numerical simulations of the sheet forming process, sheet consolidation (pressing), mechanical behaviour of the fibre network and eventual disintegration prior to recycling. The work of the post-doc will be partitioned into specific sub-projects: 1) implementing the isogeometric framework in the existing numerical code for fibre suspensions; 2) implementing isogeometric contact between the fibres to model friction and contact forces; 3) validation for single fibres and verification for suspension flow.

The work will be conducted in close collaboration between the groups in Fluid Mechanics and Solid Mechanics at KTH as well as with established groups in Linkoping University and Calgary University specializing in modelling fibre suspension flows and isogeometrical analysis.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, in engineering mechanics, fluid mechanics, material science, applied physics or similar., obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline (With some exceptions for special reasons such as periods of sick or parental leave, kindly indicate if such reason exists in your resume).
  • A particularly relevant merit for this position is a documented experience in developing tools within the isogeometric framework. Complementary expertise in solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, simulations of multiphase flows and fluid-structure interactions are welcomed.
  • Applicants must be strongly motivated, have the ability to work both independently and in a team-based environment. Applicants should also have a good level of cooperative and communicative abilities, written and oral proficiency in English. Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
