Post Doc in Molecular Microbiology

Catholic University of Leuven Department of Microbial and Molecular Sciences

In the research group of prof. René De Mot (Centre of Microbial and Plant Genetics - CMPG, Department of Microbial and Molecular Sciences at the University of Leuven, Belgium), a postdoctoral position is available for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in the framework of an EOS project (The Excellence of Science) In this RHIZOCLIP project, the ecological roles of cyclic lipopeptides (CLPs) from plant-beneficial rhizobacteria are explored. This will be pursued by an interdisciplinary approach and involves collaboration with partner groups at the University of Leuven, University of Liège, Ghent University, and University of Freiburg (Germany), providing complementary expertise in microbiology, plant physiology, biochemistry, membrane biology and chemistry.

Responsibilities

You will study the physiological role of CLPs in the lifestyle of their producers and their interactions with other microorganisms. The target molecules comprise Pseudomonas CLPs recently identified within the consortium but also novel CLPs that are actively searched for by genome mining of Pseudomonas genomes. The successful candidate will be actively involved in the collaboration with the partner groups at Ghent University and University of Liège (e.g. supplying extracts for chemical characterization of molecules or providing strains for studying plant-beneficial properties).

Profile

Candidates should have a strong background in microbiology with a keen interest in bacterial (secondary) metabolism. Expertise in microbial genetics (e.g. construction of mutants) and/or and application of bioinformatic tools for genome mining is a plus. Good social and communication skills are important to facilitate collaboration with other researchers in the consortium. Applicants should have a solid knowledge of English and a proven publication record in international peer-reviewed journals.

Offer

  • A  full-time post-doc position (initially for 1 year but extendable until end of August 2022)
  • The opportunity to participate in in a multidisciplinary interuniversity project and perform cutting-edge research
