Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Associate position in Turfgrass Entomology investigating various aspects in the IPM of turfgrass insect pests including annual bluegrass weevil and the white grub complex.

The successful applicant will join a vibrant laboratory and turfgrass center with a diverse and collaborative environment with access to cutting-edge resources in a major research university.

Candidates must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, a publication record consistent with the position and an interest in multiple aspects of IPM including pest biology/ecology, sampling/monitoring, microbial / biological control, insecticide resistance and its management.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a PhD degree preferably in Entomology or other relevant area. Experience in laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies involving insects, preferably with turfgrass insects.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Requires excellent oral and written communication skills and high level of computer literacy. Must have a high level of familiarity with typical laboratory equipment and typical software used in entomological research. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Excellent knowledge of statistical analysis, scientific writing, and prior experience in a greenhouse and field research in turfgrass preferred.

Equipment Utilized

Standard laboratory equipment including dissecting and compound microscopes, table top centrifuges, incubators, balances, sterile benches, ovens, autoclaves. Software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, statistical software (SAS or similar).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

In addition to research in the laboratory and greenhouse, the position will also have a significant component in fieldwork. The fieldwork will be performed on turf farms and golf courses that may be as much as 2 hr. drive away from the laboratory, and that the incumbent must be able to drive to. The fieldwork will include strenuous activities that often require many hours of mixed physical activities including filling and moving buckets with soil, taking hundreds of soil cores (up to 4.25" diam x 4’ depth), marking plots with hundreds of flags, filling core holes with soil, dissecting the cores in the field.

Must be able to lift 30 pounds.

Overview

60% 1. Planning, conducting, evaluating, and reporting research in turfgrass entomology with minimal supervision.
30% 2. Assisting with the writing of research proposal, research reports, and trade and scientific articles and with the preparation of extension and scientific presentations.
10% 3. Managing laboratory, greenhouse, and field activities and needs of the program including management of equipment and supplies and undergraduate student helpers and seasonal workers (approximately 10% of time).
