Summary of Duties

The Department of Geography, within the College of Arts and Sciences, seeks a Post Doctoral Scholar to join our team. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college and the academic heart of the university. The College hosts 81 majors. With 38 departments, 20+ world-class research centers, and more than 2,000 faculty and staff members, students have the unique opportunity to study with the best artists, scholars, and scientists in their field. Functions as a researcher in the area of Ocean-Atmosphere Modeling to understand Atlantic climate variability.

Engages in research activities in line with faculty supervisor, Zhengyu Liu; performs basic or applied research; identifies scope and complexity of theoretical problems to be studied; establishes joint projects with assigned research team that has potential for broader impact and innovative inquiry; works in conjunction with NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL); assists with work on understanding North Atlantic climate variability using suites of GFDL coupled ocean-atmosphere models, including the recently developed SPEAR modeling system that is used for seasonal to multi-decadal prediction and projection; works in a bi-institution team, comprising researchers at OSU and GFDL; focuses research on the mechanism of Atlantic decadal variability in SPEAR model and its relevance to the real world; performs sensitivity experiments and analyzes model output based on the GFDL SPEAR and in comparison to other models around the world, such as models used recently in CMIP6

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Climate Dynamics, or related field with a strong interest in climate modeling and science questions; Familiarity with supercomputing environments and related programming languages, in particular Linux and Fortran, as well as analysis Tools are essential.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in numerical modeling is highly desirable; Written and oral communication skills sufficient to lead manuscripts and present research at conferences are also desirable.

Target Salary $50,000.00 - $55,000.00 Annually
