Postdoc Researcher in Software Engineering

University of Gothenburg Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Postdoc Researcher Software Engineering for Cyber-Physical Systems/Automotive Software Engineering

Ref PAR 2022/266

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 55 900 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The department of Computer Science and Engineering is strongly international, with approximately 270 employees from over 30 countries. The department is a fully integrated department with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as principals. The position as a postdoctor is placed in the Division for Interaction Design and Software Engineering at the department, with the University of Gothenburg as the employer.

Located in Gothenburg – Sweden’s second-largest city – the department is surrounded by a vibrant ecosystem of software-intensive companies, such as Volvo Cars and Volvo AB, Ericsson, ABB, Boeing, and SAAB Aeronautics. The department is connected to three science parks in Gothenburg for industrial collaborations in fields including intelligent vehicles and transport systems, mobile internet, energy, nanotechnology, and life sciences. Alumni and members of the department have also created many startups, including revolutionary companies such as Spotify.

With over 20 faculty members, the Division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering is arguably one of the largest software-engineering institutes world-wide, conducting research at the highest international level in topics such as model-driven engineering, testing, software product lines, empirical software engineering, requirements engineering, autonomic computing, and cloud computing. The division has hosted past international conferences such as ICSE 2018, SPLC 2018, ICSA 2017, and REFSQ 2015.  For industrial research, the division hosts the Software Center, an associated institute with a network of five universities and ten global companies including Siemens, Axis, and Jeppesen.

The successful candidate will conduct research with Assoc. Prof. Christian Berger and work in tight collaboration with world-class researchers in the Software Engineering Division at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg. In particular, the division has a strong interesting in AI for Software Engineering, Cyber-Physical Systems, and Autonomous Driving, with several faculty members, Postdocs and PhD students working in this area.

Subject area

Software Engineering, Cyber-Physical Systems/Autonomous Driving

Subject area description

This research project is a collaboration between industry and academia in the area of autonomous driving for heavy vehicles. In particular, functional and non-functional requirements, enablers, and inhibitors to accomplish higher levels of autonomous driving (towards SAE level 4) for systems and infrastructure at scale shall be systematically investigated. The project goals include aspects such as safety, security, scalability, robustness, accessibility, and applicability by selecting, adjusting, and expanding methods and approaches to successfully realize an integrated system of autonomously acting agents within a digitalized (physical) infrastructure to autonomously fulfill tasks in a (set of) defined operational design domain(s) (ODDs).

The Postdoc will work in this project, collaborating with academic and industrial partners to accomplish this goal.

Job assignments

This position is a fulltime position for two years as a postdoc researcher in the Division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The position requires the conduction of high-quality research, with publishing at relevant peer-reviewed venues. The candidate is expected to develop their own scientific concepts as part of an industrial/academic research project within the automotive area and communicate the results of their research verbally and in writing.

The major responsibility as a postdoc is to pursue research related to the project. The postdoc will investigate challenges and opportunities related to a scalable and connected digital and physical infrastructure that are considered to be functional/non-functional enablers and inhibitors to provide safe L4 autonomous driving; the vision is to investigate and derive a methodology for evaluating, adjusting and digitalizing existing physical and digital infrastructure(s) for L4 autonomous driving. The successful candidate will participate in project meetings and coordination duties and will prepare and submit scientific publications. The proposed work requires presence at the premises of the collaborating companies, and therefore the candidate must have good social skills and collegial qualities.

The postdoc will also conduct teaching duties as needed, including giving lectures, grading assignments, and exams.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

You should have achieved a doctoral degree to qualify for a position as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated in the advertisement, for example Automotive Software Engineering, Software Architectures, Software Systems for Autonomous Driving, Cloud Systems for Automotive Systems, Requirements Engineering, and/or Digitalization. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made. Since a position as postdoctoral aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application. The person who has acquired a doctorate earlier may also be given primary consideration if there are special reasons. Special reasons are considered to be a leave of absence due to illness, service in the total defense, commissions of trust within professional and student organizations or parental leave or other similar circumstances.

You are highly motivated, self-propelled, energetic, independent and with a well-developed analytical problem-solving ability. As a person, you are empathetic, loyal and have high ethical standards.

The Department aims to actively improve our gender balance and we work broadly with equality projects. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at the University and Department. In particular, we invite female candidates to apply to this call.
