Postdoctoral Associate in Agricultural Science

Cornell University

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach.

The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns:

  • We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world’s complex, interlocking systems.
  • We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right.
  • We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere.

By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world.

Position Function

Antimicrobial peptides are ubiquitous in animals and plants and are particularly abundant in barrier epithelia where they protect against opportunistic bacterial infection. AMPs are the major mechanism for antibacterial immune defense in adult D. melanogaster and other insects.

This project will examine the varied roles of distinct D. melanogaster AMPs in fighting a spectrum of bacterial infections, using evolutionary and functional genetic approaches in combination with cell biology and protein biochemistry.

We are particularly looking for scientists with expertise and/or interest in any of the following areas:

  • Genetics-based experiments to determine the roles of particular Drosophila AMPs in fighting distinct infections.
  • Protein biochemistry and manipulation to probe AMP function.
  • Microbiological assay of AMP effects on diverse bacteria, and bacterial responses to those AMPs.
  • Quantitative genetic analysis of AMP allelic variation in natural populations.
  • Molecular evolutionary and population genetic analysis of AMPs in D. melanogaster and across the genus Drosophila.

Anticipated Division of Time

  • 85% – Conduct independent research, including design and execution of experiments, analysis of results, and preparation of findings for publication.
  • 10% – Contribute to laboratory maintenance and community.
  • 5% – Other, as needed.

Requirements

Required

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years research experience in relevant discipline.

Preferred

  • Strong publication record demonstrating research independence and capacity to bring projects to completion.

Driving is not a requirement.

Supervision Exercised

No supervision required, although oversight of undergraduate students in directed research is an available option.
