Conduct independent research under the guidance of a faculty mentor to prepare for a full-time academic or research career.


Work Performed

Definition:

  • Postdoctoral Appointee holds a PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g., ScD, MD, DVM). Non-U.S. degrees may require proof of equivalency.

  • Appointment may be offered to candidates who have completed all degree requirements but have not formally received the degree, with evidence of completion and projected conferral date.

  • For international candidates, immigration classifications (H-1B, J-1, etc.) generally require degree conferral prior to petitioning.

  • Term of appointment is limited (see Section 5 of Postdoc Policy).

  • Appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship, may include teaching, and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career.

  • Appointment is not part of clinical training unless research training under a senior mentor is the primary purpose.

  • Functions under the supervision of a mentor or department at Duke University.

  • Expected to publish research or scholarship results during the appointment period.

Expectations:

  • Conscientious discharge of research or scholarship responsibilities, including possible teaching

  • Conformance to standards of responsible conduct in research

  • Compliance with good scholarly and research practices

  • Maintenance of lab notebooks or other research records (property of Duke University)

  • Adherence to standards for use of isotopes, chemicals, infectious agents, animals, human subjects, etc.

  • Open and timely discussion with mentors about research activities; consultation with AAMC Compact Between Postdoctoral Appointees and Their Mentors encouraged

  • Prompt disclosure of materials, reagents, software, copyrightable, or potentially patentable discoveries

  • Collegial conduct towards research group members, consistent with Duke School of Medicine Honor Code of Professional Conduct

  • Compliance with all applicable University and departmental policies
