Postdoctoral Fellow in Discrete Probability

Stockholm University Department of Mathematics

Postdoctoral Fellow in Discrete Probability Stockholm

Ref. No. SU FV-1299-21

at the Department of Mathematics. Closing date: 30 April 2021.

The Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University has around 35 faculty permanent academic staff members and about 35 PhD students and post docs, divided into three divisions: Mathematics, Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. The postdoc position belongs to the Division of Mathematical Statistics. This division consists of about 12 senior staff members and equally many PhD students and post docs. Research areas in the division of mathematical statistics include e.g. discrete probability, epidemic modeling, actuarial mathematics and biostatistics.

Project description

The position is directed towards network modeling and random processes on discrete structures. Of particular interest are processes describing competition between two (or more) infectious entities. Under what circumstances can two competing entities coexist? How can we understand the spatial composition of two coexisting entities? The answers depend both on the spreading dynamics and on properties of the contact structure in the underlying population. Modeling of network structures has been a very active research area during the last decades, and analysing stochastic dynamics on such structures currently generates a lot of interest. The area is inspired e.g. by social processes, epidemics and statistical mechanics.

The position is hosted by Maria Deijfen. Other researchers in discrete probability at the department include Daniel Ahlberg, Pieter Trapman and Tom Britton, and a number of PhD students. The research project is supported by the Swedish Research Council.

Main responsibilities

Research. The position also includes up to 20 % teaching.
