Postdoctoral Fellow in Economics

Ref. No. SU FV-2983-23

at Stockholm Resilience Centre. Closing date: 15 September 2023.

The Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) is a leading international centre in sustainability science for biosphere stewardship, at the Stockholm University. The SRC currently employs around 135 members of staff. It was founded in 2007 and is a joint initiative between Stockholm University and the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics at The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Project description
We are hiring two Postdoctoral Research Fellows to join us in the European Research Council starting grant project INFLUX: Emerging pests and pathogens as a novel lens for unravelling social-ecological cascades. Emerging pests and pathogens (EPPs), such as emerging infectious diseases in humans, plants or livestock and agricultural insect and plant pests are an increasingly disruptive force to human society that can cause large-scale social and ecological change. INFLUX aims to understand how shocks and governance challenges associated with EPPs cascade across time, space, and scales in social-ecological systems and how EPPs can be governed for positive outcomes for sustainable development.

Main responsibilities
The Postdocs will play a central role in the project as they will work across its more focused activities to produce synthetic high-quality research outputs and help with co-supervision of PhD students. As part of these activities they will also have a leading role in building a comparative database for studying social-ecological cascades across different forms of EPPs. Examples of research topics may include comparative studies of the drivers of EPPs, the cascading impacts of EPPs, governance of EPPs, and transformative responses and preventive approaches to EPPs.

We welcome applicants with a wide variety of (inter)disciplinary and methodological backgrounds, the latter e.g. spanning mixed methods, data science and research involving questionnaires.

The Postdocs will be employed at the Stockholm Resilience Centre but will work with an international team of researchers associated with the project across the globe. There is also opportunity to participate in internal activities of the SRC and to engage with closely collaborating institutions of SRC, such as the GEDB programme at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process special attention will be given to research skills needed for the position. We seek a candidate with the following qualifications, or alternatively two candidates with a complementary subset of the following qualifications:

  • A track record demonstrating excellent empirical work related to EPPS, data science or social-ecological systems / environmental social science demonstrated in academic outputs in the form of scientific publications
  • Methodological toolkit related to data science or questionnaires.
  • Skills in retrieving, handling and organizing multiple highly heterogenous forms of data according to best practices within data science
  • Shown ability to formulate own original research ideas and conduct research independently within a bigger team.
  • Willingness to work as part of an interdisciplinary team, and evidence of previous work with researchers from different disciplines.
  • Ability to communicate research ideas and results and an interest to engage with stakeholders outside the academic community.
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills (Swedish is not a requirement).

We are looking for a candidate who can work within a highly interdisciplinary team and agenda setting research project with researchers from all career stages and backgrounds. You are responsible, responsive, and a good team player. You are self-motivated, take responsibility for your tasks and have a structured way of working.
