Position Description

Harvard University is seeking a full-time postdoctoral researcher with a background in Physical Oceanography to join the research group of Professor Fiamma Straneo (jointly across the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences).

The postdoctoral researcher will investigate:

  • Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

  • The Irminger Sea

  • Oceanography of the Southwest Greenland shelf

This research is part of the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP). The postdoc will work with a variety of data (moored, vessel-based, and remotely-sensed) and closely collaborate with Professor Straneo and her team. Engagement in planning and executing fieldwork, as well as mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, is also expected.

The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, depending on performance and availability of funds.


Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography or a related field is required by the time of appointment.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience in analyzing hydrographic, velocity, and other oceanographic data, including programming in Matlab or Python

  • Expertise in collecting field observations is highly desirable

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
