The Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in star formation in high-redshift galaxies (reference number SU FV-4535-20). The Department of Astronomy has around 80 employees. The main research areas are Galaxies, Supernovae, Computational astrophysics, Solar physics, and Planet and star formation. Stockholm University has access to a range of facilities including ESO, LSST, and NOT membership, and the Galaxies group leads several major research campaigns with the Hubble Space Telescope and ESO/VLT.

Project description

This project aims at studying star formation and feedback at the highest spatial resolution in gravitationally lensed high-redshift galaxies, developing new analysis tools to exploit HST, ESO/VLT and upcoming JWST observations.

Main responsibilities

The successful applicant will join Dr. Angela Adamo’s group and the research performed within the Galaxy group. Experience in multi-wavelength analyses of star formation processes in local/high redshift galaxies and lensing models are considered fundamental to carry out the project. The position also offers the possibility to interact with other research groups at the department, both theoretical and observational, as well as within the Oskar Klein Centre.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The PhD degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills focusing on stellar evolution synthesis models combined with photoionization models, spectral analysis of far-ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared data, including previous experience with large 3D data cubes and gravitational lensing models.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to a doctoral degree in Astronomy/Astrophysics.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date summer 2021, or as per agreement.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
