at the Department of Geological Sciences. Closing date: 10 December 2020.

The Department of Geological Sciences is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science with about 70 employees and 1000 students per year. The department supports a broad range of basic research within marine geology, geochemistry and classical geology.

Project description

Marine terrace formations and circular depressions, potentially related to submarine groundwater discharges (SGD), have been identified through high-resolution geophysical mapping and geological sampling of the seabed in several areas of the Baltic Sea. These SGDs may play an important role for spreading of pollutants, including radioactive  substances, as well as for calculations of how large the inflow of nutrients can be to the Baltic Sea (especially phosphorus).

Main responsibilities

This two-year postdoctoral position is part of a project funded by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, which aims to

i) demetmine wheather observed marine terrace formations and depressions in the seabed are related to SGD or not, and if so

ii) determine their relationship to the seabed geology (i.e.sediment depositions, bedrock composition and structures such as deformations zones) and

iii) estunate the amount of groundwater entering a fefined study area east of the island Askö in Stockholm´s southern archipelago and assess its impact on the sea-water composition.

The postdoctoral project can take differens directions depending on the applicant´s background. It may, for example, take a geochemical focus where SGDs are tracked by means of geochemical measurements(e.g. isotope ratios, chemical composition) of water and sediment. A more hydrogeological/geophysical approach is also possible where, for example, hydrogeological modeling based on field obervations constitutes the main component of the postdoctoral project.

The tasks depend on the applicant´s chosen reserach direction and approach.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to how well the applicant is assumed to be able to complete the project tasks. Particular emphasis is placed on the applicant´s knowledge and skills within the subject of his/her proposed specialization, capability to express their work orally and in writing, creativity, ability to take initiatives, independence and ability to work with other reserachers.

The evaluation is based on previous education and experience, quality of previous published reserach, ambition expressed in the motivation letter, description of the proposed project direction and potentially interviews. You must be able to work independently and in groups, as well as towards deadlines as the project will have specific sub-goals. You should be fluent in English since the goal of your work is to summarize the results in international peer-reviewed research articles.

Experience of previous work with research related to groundwater is an advantage. Other qualifications are assessed on the basis of the applicant´s proposed approach for adressing the research questions.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
