MMK is a leading institution in materials synthesis and processing, structural characterization and materials applications. It compromises the research areas of analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry, and materials chemistry, the latter is one of the leading research areas of Stockholm University. Important characterization methods at the department today are X-ray, electron and neutron scattering, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and various spectroscopic methods.

Project description

The position will be associated with the project “Long Lasting Battery System” in short LOLABAT funded by an EU Horizon 2020 program with 17 European partners from 7 different countries (France, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Italian) : 7 being R&D institutions (SuperGrid, CEA, Stockholm University, Helmholtz Institute, Cergy University, ZSW and Genova University), 6 SMEs (Bcare, AITEC, Accurec, Optima, InExtenso and Sunergy ) and 4 large companies (EverZinc, EDP, RINA and KME).

The well-balanced and interdisciplinary profiles of the partners cover satisfactorily the entire battery value chain along with the diverse fundamentals R&D fields required in the project. This will enable good possibilities for a successful candidate to build a research network for the future.

This is a 24-month position to synthesize and evaluate novel Ni-electrode materials for a rechargeable NiZn battery. The aim is to increase electrode capacity while reducing critical elements. Ni-electrodes are also used in other commercial battery chemistries such as NiMH, NiH2 and NiCd.

Functional electrode materials as well as electrodes will be prepared with standard as well as new procedures and it is essential that the candidate is well experiences in lab scale electrode fabrication and electrochemical evaluation. Experience with working in aqueous systems is advantageous.

Main responsibilities

The position involves the synthesis and characterization of new sustainable battery materials. This will include advanced synthetic strategies and characterization methods. The work also includes sample preparation and data analysis and as well as a presentation of the obtained results in reports, publications and presentations. The project will involve national and international collaborations with research groups developing materials and methods to prepare functional materials.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. The selection is based primarily on scientific excellence and experience in the relevant fields. Applicants must have strong communication skills with excellent knowledge in English, both written and spoken.

Applicants are expected to hold a PhD degree in Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
