University of Gothenburg Institute of Medicine

Postdoctoral Fellow in psychoneurogastroenterology

Ref PAR 2021/183

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Our primary research focus at department of molecular and clinical medicine is on metabolism, diabetes, gastroenterology, obesity and cardiovascular disease. We support and promote research and teaching in translational medicine to improve health and to benefit society. The overall goal is to create an excellent translational research environment of a very high international standard.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder, which is present in 10-15% of the population in Western countries. Psychological factors have a central role for IBS symptoms, and many patients suffer from other bodily symptoms, which influence the disease burden. The mechanisms explaining behind this overlap are not fully understood, and the relative importance of peripheral versus central pathophysiologic abnormalities is not known. The Neurogastroenterology research group at the department of molecular and clinical medicine has a long-standing experience in performing successful translational research focusing on the complex pathophysiology and symptom patterns in IBS.

Job assignments

The person employed should be responsible for recruitment and inclusion of patients in a prospective European multicenter Horizon 2020 study in IBS patients, focusing on symptoms and co-morbid conditions, and the association with gut microbiota, immunology, nutrition and brain-gut interactions. The position includes analyses of data linking pathophysiology and symptoms, as well as analyses determining causes underlying overlapping gastrointestinal and other symptoms in IBS, with the focus on the role of psychological factors, as part of a European multicenter project. The person employed should also lead the development and research on psychological treatment alternatives for patients with IBS and other functional gastrointestinal disorders.

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.

For this position, previous work with research on the field of psychology and (neuro) gastroenterology, and practical experience in delivering psychological treatment options are clearly advantageous. Good command of English, both written and spoken language is necessary. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability for this position.
