The Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University has around 40 permanent faculty staff members and about 35 PhD students and post docs, divided into three divisions: Mathematics, Computational mathematics and Mathematical statistics. The current postdoc position belongs to the latter. This division consists of about 12 faculty staff members and about 15 PhD students and post docs. The active research areas in the Division of Mathematical statistics contain biostatistics and biostochastics (including infectious disease modelling), discrete probability, actuarial mathematics, theoretical statistics and more.

Project description

The present position has Tom Britton as PI and is supported by a grant from the Swedish Research Council. The project area is stochastic and statistical modelling of infectious disease outbreaks. It is a wide project, but possible working areas may include stochastic models for contact tracing or statistical investigation of generation times and identifiability issues.

In parallel, another postdoctoral fellow is announced with Tom Britton as PI from a grant from NordForsk, which is a collaboration with Norway (Oslo University) and Finland (Aalto University) on covid-19 analyses who also announces positions. See separate advertisement to apply for this position.

Main responsibilities

Main tasks: Research. The position also includes up to 20 % of a combination of teaching, supervision and administrational tasks. 

Research project: The project plan is quite open within the area of stochastic and statistical modelling of infectious disease outbreaks. Some potential projects are: stochastic modelling of contact tracing, statistical investigation of the generation time, and identifiability issues when collecting under-reported outbreak data. The candidate will work together with Tom Britton, but it may also involve collaboration with other members of the epidemic group at the department (currently 3 Faculty, 1 post doc and 3 PhD students), and of course also people elsewhere.

The research project of the postdoc will be decided together with the post doc but will of course lie within the general field of the big project. It is expected that the post doc also takes part in common research activities in epidemic group, and in the division of Mathematical statistics.

The candidate is expected to publish methodological and/or applied papers in high impact peer-reviewed scientific journals, and to present results at scientific conferences.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

A candidate should at the start of the employment hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in a mathematical/quantitative subject, with a substantial component in mathematical/stochastic/statistical modelling and/or data analysis, preferably within the area of infectious diseases.

Assessment criteria

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process special weight will be given to scientific expertise. A qualified applicant should have competence and experience in one or preferably several of the following areas: statistical modelling and theory, probability, statistical analysis, stochastic processes, computer programming, mathematics, high-dimensional data-analysis and infectious disease epidemiology. Since the position is within the Department of Mathematics, general knowledge of Mathematical sciences is necessary.

It is also essential that you have the motivation and drive to combine relevant elements from computational/mathematical/statistical disciplines to answer epidemiological questions. A qualified applicant is expected to be fluent in both written and spoken English, and to have excellent communication and social skills.

Terms of employment

The employment is full time and two year long. Starting date is as soon as possible and no later than July 1, 2021.
