Postdoctoral Position in Materials Science

Argonne National Laboratory

The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position in the area of operando imaging of battery reactions. The research project aims at elucidating novel local electrochemistry in oxide cathodes. Experimental work involves the design of experimental setups and protocols of synchrotron X-ray microscopy to measure chemical evolution of cathode materials with high spatial and temporal resolution, and the analysis of large data sets using machine learning. Position Requirements Ph.D. degree in chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related discipline with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent Strong experimental and theoretical background in electrochemical science Experience with the design of setups for operando experiments, where electrochemistry is occurring during measurements with a chemical probe (not limited to X-rays) Programming expertise in Python or other scientific programming languages Demonstrated analytical skills, critical thinking and independent articulation of sophisticated hypotheses in basic science Ability to work in a team across different disciplines Excellent oral and written communication skills This position will require travel for work at out-of-state or international synchrotron facilities Preferred: Experience with inorganic solid-state chemistry Knowledge of synchrotron-based X-ray imaging to probe local structure and chemical reactivity Familiarity with the characterization of battery materials is welcome but not required Initiative to pursue access to resources such as beamtime or other support Job Family Postdoctoral Family Job Profile Postdoctoral Appointee Worker Type Long-Term (Fixed Term) Time Type Full time As an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer, and in accordance with our core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity and teamwork, Argonne National Laboratory is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace that fosters collaborative scientific discovery and innovation.
