We have a strong focus on leading research and good teaching, and we have access to equipment for advanced computer calculations and experimental investigations. You will work in a group of researchers who are motivated by understanding and solving societal challenges.

Subject description

For the current position, the research is focused on wood mechanics, and particularly the structural performance of innovative timber-based products. Advanced numerical modelling using finite elements is key. We have a long research tradition of applying and developing fracture mechanics for wood and wood-based materials, and we foresee such approaches to be included in your research. Experimental work can also be part of the research, although to a minor extent and depending on the interest and background of the applicant. The position also includes teaching at the advanced level, primarily by supervision of master’s student projects.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

Your work will be part of ongoing research projects that we run in collaboration with other European research institutions and industry, one example on such ongoing research project is InnoTLT (innotlt.com) Your work duties will include:

  • Research within the subject area
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with other research institutions and industry
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements

  • PhD-degree, or an international degree deemed equivalent to PhD, in a subject area relevant for the position, including documented research involving the use of finite elements for structural analysis.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Documented experience in research relating to

            o   wood mechanics

            o   fracture mechanics

            o   mechanical testing

            o   wood physics

  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Personal qualities:

            o   Independence

            o   Collaborative skills

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
