Job Overview

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be based at the Center for Benefit-Cost Studies of Education (CBCSE) in the Education Policy Division of the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. The start date for the position is planned for Summer 2021, with some flexibility. The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with Prof. Brooks Bowden on a variety of projects. One project is in partnership with Global TIES at New York University and Sesame Workshop evaluating the cost-effectiveness of early childhood interventions for refugee children. Other opportunities include policy evaluations using large data, as well as proposing and conducting field work. The postdoc would have access to a wide range of enrichment activities including CBCSE’s methodological training in economic evaluation funded by the Institute for Education Sciences.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:

The successful candidate will work closely with Prof. Brooks Bowden in supporting research and training through CBCSE. This includes, but is not limited to, collaborating with Prof. Bowden and other members of research and project teams in developing and refining long-range strategic plans and project timelines; drafting reports to funders; managing project data; conducting data analysis; and managing communication about projects with various stakeholders. There are opportunities to participate in many research phases including data collection, data analysis, manuscript writing, and research presentations.



An earned doctoral degree in economics of education, education policy, economics, policy, or a related field before the start date. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential. We also highly value personal initiative, strong writing skills, and effective collaboration experience. Our preferred experience includes experience with field experiments, working with large data and quasi-experimental designs to estimate effects, and cost-effectiveness analysis.
