Defence Science and Technology Group and the Dismount Combat Program within the Australian Army have funded a University of Adelaide project “Impact of latency on human perception and physical movement”. This Project is part of a Defence initiative that aims to optimise the design and application of information displays and interfaces for enhancing the performance of the dismounted combatant. Emerging digital display devices aim to augment the dismounted combatant’s ability to operate in complex and dynamic environments through the presentation of information in new and novel ways. However these technologies present significant human factors risks particularly relating to perception and cognition. The overarching objective of the research project is to assist in defining system requirements, informing acquisition decisions and assisting in the development and application of technologies that will provide human-system performance benefits. This project is cross-disciplinary involving experts in vision science, biomechanics, computational modelling, education and augmented and virtual reality.

The Active Vision Lab (AVL) is seeking a full-time postdoctoral researcher. In this role, you will be expected to participate in, and contribute to the AVL, School of Psychology, School of Medicine and other research seminar series as appropriate. The successful candidate will contribute to publications in leading international journals and conferences. You will also contribute to time-critical project related outputs and outcomes including project reports and briefings for Defence clients.

Opportunities will be provided for conference travel, and travel for the purposes of facilitating research collaborations with Australian and international partners, as appropriate.

To be successful you will need:

  • A PhD from an Australian Higher Education Organisation (or equivalent) in behavioural neuroscience, biomechanics, vision science, engineering and computer science, or have equivalent qualifications or research experience.
  • A demonstrated record of publications in leading academic journals and conferences commensurate with that expected at this level.
  • Demonstrated experience in programming human behavioural experiments.
  • Demonstrated experience in systems integration, computational modelling and programming in Matlab or Python or equivalent qualifications and experience.
  • To be eligible to hold a Commonwealth of Australia Department of Defence security clearance as defined as: https://www1.defence.gov.au/security/clearances/about/vetting-assessment.
