Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Recent German-Language Jewish Literature

Are you an independent researcher with a research focus on German-language Jewish literature, especially since 1990? Do you have an interest particularly in writing by writers with a Jewish background who migrated to Germany from the former Soviet Union after 1990? Would you like to deepen your understanding of this research field and add to its development?

You will contribute to an AHRC Fellowship with Professor Stuart Taberner as PI, which focuses on the wealth of German-language literature by writers with a Jewish background that has emerged in recent years, especially by individuals who migrated to Germany from the early Soviet Union in the early 1990s. You will identify your own specific interests in this broad area, work autonomously on your own articles and conferences papers, and engage in a sustained dialogue with Professor Taberner that, it is hoped, will inform both his work and your own. You might focus on one or two authors, a particular theme across several authors, or—following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, for example, or the recurrent resurgence of conflict in Israel/Palestine—post-Soviet German-language authors’ social and political engagement. You will also be responsible for coordinating a panel at a conference, most likely the American German Studies Association in 2023 (taking place in Montréal, in early October).

You will have completed a Ph.D. in German Literature, Jewish Studies, Migration Studies (with an interest in post-Soviet migration), or a related field. You may also have knowledge of Russian and/or Russian literature.
