About the department

At the Department of Applied Information Technology, critical and interdisciplinary research is conducted in an international environment of the highest quality with great relevance to the surrounding society. Our researchers are in the midst of the debate to help explain and problematize IT- and society-related challenges linked to the digitalization of society.

We develop the individual's knowledge and ability to analyze, understand and handle various aspects of IT as well as the interaction between human and technology in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, digital innovation, e-Health, Internet of Things, mobile communication, robots, social media and IT in schools and teaching.
We provide education at Bachelor's and Master's level anchored in research and the development of society.

The department is located at the knowledge-intensive Lindholmen, and has a well-developed collaboration with both business and public sector as well as the civil society.

Division of Learning, Communication and IT, LCIT

Through this position, you will be able to expand your knowledge as an independent researcher and develop your own interests within the project frame. You will be part of a strong scientific team including experienced researchers and PhD students both within the project and the division. About 20 professors, researchers, lecturers and PhD students work at the division. We work with questions concerning how IT changes the conditions for and creates opportunities for learning and communication in different contexts such as school, work life and leisure. Our research includes a broad range of research objects, theoretical perspectives and methods. We conduct a variety of design research and analytical studies of different empirical conditions.

Subject area description

The subject area is concerned with understanding how information technology changes the conditions for how people are educated, learn and develop new knowledge in individual, organizational and societal contexts.

Job assignments

This position is funded through the project Reconfigurations of Educational In/Equality in a Digital World (RED). The project, which is funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, is an international collaboration between researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Georg-Eckert Institut in Germany, The University of South Africa, Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional in Mexico, and Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales in Argentina. It investigates the overarching research question: How is schooling being reconfigured through digital technology in different regions of the world and in what ways are these changes reproducing, exacerbating or alleviating in/equality? This is examined in Sweden, Germany, South Africa, Botswana, Mexico, and Argentina with a focus on understanding the political goals, institutional structures, and socio-technical arrangements in different contexts, and on critically reflecting on how these are related to in/equality.

The successful applicant will work to examine both policy and practices that are relevant for the digitalization of schooling in Sweden guided by the core research questions of the RED project. This work will involve documentary analysis, interview and ethnographic fieldwork. In addition, the successful applicant will collaborate with researchers examining the five other focus countries in the project to compare and contrast across contexts. Based on this work, the successful applicant will be expected to both contribute to and lead the production of scientific publications.


To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctorate. Those who have obtained a doctoral degree no longer than 3 years counting from last date of application should primarily be considered for the position. Also those who have obtained a doctoral degree longer than 3 years should be considered, should there be special reasons. Special reasons are considered sick leave, military duty, positions of trust within a trade union or a student union or parental leave or other similar circumstances.


The scientific proficiency of an applicant must be documented through scientific publications of relevance to the stated project. It will be assessed in terms of the ability to independently initiate and conduct research, and the ability to collaborate on research as well as contribute to a research environment.
We are looking for a self-motivated person with good collaboration skills and relationship-building ability.

The applicant must have:

  • Demonstrated experience of conducting, synthesizing and publishing analyses of policy and/or practice in an area related to education, digitalization or governance
  • Demonstrated experience of successfully conducting independent research
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally at an advanced level primarily in Swedish, secondarily in Danish or Norwegian
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, in particular written, advanced level English

Additional, advantageous qualifications and skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues related to the digitalization of education
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital platform and networking technologies
  • Demonstrated experience of conducting and analyzing interviews
  • Demonstrated experience of working with digital methods in the social sciences

The position is a fixed-term employment of two years at 100 % of full time - according to the postdoctoral collective agreement - and is placed at the Department of Applied Information Technology.
Start date according to agreement.
