Postdoctoral Researcher in Microbiology

University College Cork

Post-Doctoral Researcher, School of Microbiology and SUSFERM

24 Months, Fixed-term, Whole-time Post

Position summary

A position is available for a post-doctoral scientist to work in the School of Microbiology and the SUSFERM Fermentation Science Centre on a microbial strain development project jointly funded by Enterprise Ireland and an industry partner. The School of Microbiology at University College Cork is the leading centre in Ireland for research in food, microbiota, environmental microbiology and microbial biotechnology and SUSFERM is a centre of excellence for microbial fermentation science https://www.ucc.ie/en/susferm/. The project led by SUSFERM Director, Prof. John Morrissey, who also heads a yeast and microbial biotechnology group in UCC http://orcid.org/0000-0001-7960-2001.

The project will develop innovative microbial strains that have specific applications related to production of food components or ingredients. The appointee will be responsible for developing a microbial system in yeast or bacteria using the latest synthetic biology approaches. He or she will also work closely with the industry partner on commercial aspects such as regulatory issues and commercial opportunities. It is therefore an excellent opportunity for a researcher seeking to expand their expertise beyond the laboratory by gaining direct experience of biotechnology in a fast moving sector.

The appointee will already have excellent laboratory skills in the area of molecular biology and/or synthetic biology applied in a microbial system. They will have the flexibility and willingness to apply their expertise in similar or new systems. They may have direct experience of microbial fermentation or physiology. They will also have a strong appreciation of the context in which modern biotechnology works, in particular areas like sustainability, intellectual property management, and regulatory considerations. They will be goal-orientated with a high level of communication and personal effectiveness skills. Extensive opportunities to further develop these skills will be provided in the context of the project.
