The Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Plant Success in Nature and Agriculture

The Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Plant Success in Nature and Agriculture is a research Centre within the School of Biological Sciences, School of Mathematics and Physics, School of Law and the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI).  The ARC CoE for Plant Success is administered at The University of Queensland and has Nodes at the University of Tasmania (UTAS), Monash University, Macquarie University (MQ) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT).  There are also a number of domestic and international partner institutions.

The ARC CoE for Plant Success will discover the adaptive strategies underpinning productivity and resilience in diverse plants and deepen knowledge of the genetic and physiological networks driving key traits. Using novel quantitative and computational approaches, the Centre will link gene networks with traits across biological levels, giving plant breeders an unparalleled predictive capacity. The Centre will accelerate technologies to transfer successful networks into crops and build legal frameworks to secure this knowledge. With a uniquely multidisciplinary team, the Centre will deliver new strategies to address the problems of food security and climate change, establishing Australia as a global leader in these areas.

The Australian Research Council funded the CoE for Plant Success in late 2019 and work is underway to establish the Centre, which has 17 chief investigators, 11 partner investigators and 27 associate investigators.

About This Opportunity 

Working with the Centre Director and Deputy Director and their relevant research groups/collaborators, you will be responsible for building computational and mathematical models of the mechanisms/processes/networks that underpin shoot architecture. With colleagues, they will also work with molecular, physiological and whole plant phenomic and genomic data generated from Arabidopsis populations and genotypes.  With collaborators the models and population data will enhance further discovery of genetic and molecular components and enable an understanding of selection to improve the rate of genetic gain in breeding.

You will have a wide range of research, teaching, service and engagement duties and responsibilities which is listed in the Position Description below.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role, you will possess, or be working toward a PhD or equivalent in quantitative biology. Experience in quantitative description of networks is desirable. You will contribute to meaningful research, with a track record publication of research findings in peer reviewed journals and conferences. You will have demonstrated experience working with biological or other complex networks with an emphasis on quantitative analysis including some programming experience and statistical analysis (e.g. in R). Modelling experience is also highly desirable in this role. Your excellent interpersonal and communication skills will equip you to work in a cross-disciplinary environment, establishing effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

To be successful at a Level B level, you will also demonstrate clear evidence of your leadership skills. This will be demonstrated through your strong track record of leading and working on multiple projects and supervision of postgraduate research students. You will also have experience in programming, statistical analysis and modelling.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position at Academic Research Level A or B.

For Level A: The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $70,449.07 - $94,637.91 per annum, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $82,753.80 - $110,726.35 per annum.

For Level B: The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $99,542.79 - $118,206.74 per annum plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $116,465.07 - $138,301.88 per annum.
