Postdoctoral Researcher in Physics

University College Cork Department of Physics

Post-Doctoral Researcher, Department of Physics

24 Month, Fixed-term, Whole-time Post

Position summary

We invite applications for a Post-Doctoral position in the research group of Dr. Andreas Ruschhaupt (Department of Physics, University College Cork). This position is part of the “Shortcut-Enhanced Quantum Thermodynamics” project jointly centered in University College Cork (research group of A. Ruschhaupt) and Trinity College Dublin (research group of J. Goold) funded by the Science Foundation Ireland Frontiers for the Future Programme.

We are currently at the beginning of a second quantum revolution: With technology developments reaching smaller and smaller scales, quantum effects must be taken fully into consideration. Such new quantum technologies are already emerging. Nevertheless, the realization of quantum technologies which is beyond the proof-of-principle state and which fully utilize the potential of quantum mechanics remains a major challenge because of the fragile nature of quantum states. There is a strong need for understanding and controlling many-particle complex systems at the quantum level. The key of the “Shortcut-Enhanced Quantum Thermodynamics” project is to combine quantum control via shortcuts-to-adiabaticy and quantum thermodynamics to design a new route for solving these challenges.

The appointed candidate will be working on the analytical development of new quantum control techniques via shortcuts-to-adiabaticity in many-particle systems and on the development and application of numerical simulation of the dynamics of quantum systems by parallel algorithms running on Graphics Processing Units (GPU).

SFI Frontiers for the Future Programme seeks to provide opportunities to address gender imbalance within research community. Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

Post Duration: 24 Months, with a possibility of a 12 month extension

Salary: €37,873 - €45,041 p.a. (IUA Salary Scale)
