We are now seeking for

Two Doctoral Students and One Postdoctoral Researcher to join our multidisciplinary research team to work for a new Infotech Oulu project “SAFE BIOMONITORING BY BIOICT INTEGRATED WEARABLES”

The successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary research group led by Prof. Juha Röning from the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Oulu and the Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group (BISG, The Co-PIs in this Infotech research project are Professors Seppo Vainio, Valerio Izzi, Sylvain Sebert, and Ville Pimenoff, who represent of the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oulu, Finland. The scientists chosen through this recruitment process will work as a team with guidance from the abovementioned research leaders. The work will be data driven, in the biomedical field (Doctoral students) and biocomputing (Postdoctoral researcher) based on large source of biomolecular data (e.g. GTEX), genomics (FINNGEN) and longitudinal cohorts ( Doctoral students and postdoctoral researcher will also have some teaching opportunities. The team is part of the two flagships ( and

Open positions for two doctoral students

Synopsis of the doctoral students (DS)

- DS 1: Molecular machinery of extracellular vesicle secretion. Contact, Associate professor Valerio Izzi ( and Dr. Ville Pimenoff (  The production and release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) by multiple cell types is an established concept in health and disease. However, a systematic catalog of different EVs markers and cargos, as well as the molecular drivers of their production and release as well as the machinery required to produce them is missing. To explore this EVs atlas for disease associations, the successful candidate will make use of large multi-omics cohorts and integrative bioinformatics and data analysis approaches to identify EVs signatures across healthy and pathological (e.g., cancer) samples and to impute both the molecular signals governing them and the most likely targets and effects dependent on them.

- DS 2: Molecular epidemiology of skin-to-health pathways. Contact, Professor Sylvain Sebert ( and Dr. Nsrein Ali ( Evidence strongly supports that the skin and the skin-based secretions can mirror a person’s glycemic and cardiometabolic health. However, we have yet to understand and model the causal link between variations in human cardio-metabolic health and skin responsiveness. To address these knowledge gaps the successful candidate will develop methods of molecular genetics (e.g. mendelian randomization, genetic structural equation models) to inform on the causal signal to monitor.

Job requirements:

We are welcoming candidates with a strong background in genetic epidemiology, biostatistics, and bioinformatics. We seek candidates with scientific curiosity and skills in research using large data, longitudinal studies and causal approaches in epidemiology and machine learning. The successful candidate will join a pluri-disciplinary team and are therefore requested excellent communication skills in English (oral and writing).

Qualification requirements for doctoral students

  • A successful applicant must hold a master's degree in a field relevant to the specific position.
  • Applicants close to finishing their master's degrees will be considered eligible to apply. The degree must be completed prior to beginning the employment.
  • Fluent oral and written English skills, good communication and teamwork skills are required.
  • Experience in academic writing and presentation skills are required.
  • Research experience in a multidisciplinary and multinational environment will be taken as merits.

Open position for a postdoctoral researcher in bio-computing:

Data integration and biosensing. Contact, Professor Juha Röning (juha.rö and Professor Seppo Vainio ( New wearable and sensing based technologies now co-exist to objectively inform on individual health. We are seeking for a talented researcher with good to excellent background in signal integration and artificial intelligence to continue developing our experimental data and empirically based sensing method translating causal biological signal from the skin and its interplay with behavioral factors (physical activity, sleep, nutrition) into relevant health information and recommendation.

Qualification requirements for a postdoctoral researcher

  • The applicant must have a PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational sciences, or a related field at the commencement of the position. The doctoral degree must have been received no more than 10 years ago.
  • Applicants close to finishing their PhD degrees will be considered eligible to apply. The degree must be completed prior to beginning the employment.
  • Experience with big data management and analysis
  • Strong experience with programming languages (e.g. Python, Perl, C/C++)
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g. R, Stata, SAS)
  • Experience with Unix/Linux environments
  • Excellent English skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Ability to communicate complex computational subject matters to non-experts
  • An ability to pursue independent research, work productively in a team, and supervise younger scientists are necessary.
  • The candidate should have good written and verbal English skills.

What we offer

We offer you a place in an exceptionally talented research group, working to solve globally significant research problems.

  • In addition to modern research facilities, we offer you personnel benefits such as free occupational healthcare, affordable sport services and endless opportunities to develop your skills and competences.
  • Regular salary is paid 12 months per year, including paid leave and an additional holiday bonus in the summer.
  • The successful candidate will receive also benefits provided by the Finnish government to residents, for example possibility to obtain access to the national healthcare system, tax benefits for employees with children and high-quality, affordable childcare services.

The salary of selected doctoral students will be initially set on level 2, and later levels 2 – 4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a supplementary remuneration is given for personal achievement and performance (max. 50 %). In practice, the salary is between 2200 – 2700 € per month for an early-stage researcher, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and progress of the doctoral thesis.

The salary of the selected postdoctoral researcher will be in accordance with the Finnish universities salary system (for teaching and research personnel): level 5. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3000 – 3700 € per month.
