swisspeace is a practice and research institute dedicated to advancing effective peacebuilding. It supports and advises local, national, and international actors relevant for peacebuilding, undertakes research on topics particularly relevant for peacebuilding practice, provides spaces for exchange and dialogue, and shapes peace policy in Switzerland and globally. swisspeace is an associated institute of the University of Basel.

swisspeace fosters national and international excellence in peace research, teaching, and training by partnering with academics worldwide and using inter- and transdisciplinary approaches. Our research combines scientific rigor with practice-relevance. Our findings feed into academic, policy and practice discussions with the objective to improve peacebuilding actions and their impact.

To strengthen and expand its research, swisspeace is recruiting a: Postdoctoral Researcher (80 - 100 %)
Starting date: 1 January 2023 (or by agreement)

The postdoctoral researcher will become part of the swisspeace research community and will be hosted by a respective programmatic team. The researcher is expected to contribute to the research profile and intellectual environment at swisspeace by producing high quality research in the, broadly defined, area of peace studies and participating in scientific activities. Candidates with a research background and plan fitting within swisspeace's areas of expertise and strategic interests will be given preference.

Postdocs at swisspeace are affiliated with the University of Basel's Department of Social Sciences, where they can also teach and enjoy full access to the university's resources. swisspeace strives to create conditions for the Postdoc to complete their research plans, initiate new research agendas, and apply for third-party research funding.

Your position

  • Produce high-quality research output in the form of publications and other scientific communication (participation in international conferences, networking, etc.)
  • Design innovative research projects and acquire research funding from Swiss and international research funding bodies
  • Assume teaching assignments at the University of Basel (at undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as in continuing education)
  • Contribute actively to the exchange of knowledge and a dialogue between research, practice and policy through workshops, practice-oriented consultancies, and trainings
  • Contribute to shaping and implementing swisspeace's overall strategic development and international research profile

Your profile

  • Outstanding PhD degree in a field related to peacebuilding (e.g., political science, international relations, social anthropology, urban or gender studies, international law, psychology)
  • Ambition to shape peacebuilding research with a strong link to the policy and practice
  • Excellent publication record in accordance with career stage
  • Track record, or clear potential, to acquire research funding
  • International profile through experience in research visits and/or fieldwork
  • Interest in research partnerships with academics and university institutions in the Global South
  • Excellent English language skills
