Position description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position beginning as early as June 2021.

We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher with experience in geomorphology and landscape processes and especially in quantitative analysis of river networks in erosional and depositional environments, such as river deltas. Familiarity with remote sensing data of landscapes and methodologies for feature extraction (rivers, waterbodies, etc.) is highly desirable, as is experience and/or interest to learn graph theoretical approaches for the analysis of river networks and computation of metrics which could be used to differentiate between systems in different geomorphic environments. Combining knowledge from experimental settings, numerical modeling, and analysis of field deltas is desirable to understand the relations between forcing (river, tide, wave dominance) and the expression that this forcing leaves on the river network structure.

The candidate should have a strong publication record, strong analytical skills and a background in quantitative geomorphology and hydrology, GIS and computer programming skills in Python/MATLAB. Experience in high-performance computing, remote sensing and handling large data sets is preferable. Responsibilities will include designing and running numerical experiments, analyzing data from past events and measurement campaigns, developing process-level understanding and leading peer-reviewed publications.

The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate within the research group of Distinguished Professor Efi Foufoula-Georgiou in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UC Irvine and other groups in the US and UK on tropical deltas and also arctic deltas. Opportunities exist for collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers.

Initial appointment will be for a 12-month period and will be renewable for up to two-years, subject to performance and availability of funding. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D., in civil engineering, hydrology, or a related field from an accredited university.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publications, and contact information for three references. Apply by submitting your application to our online RECRUIT system at: https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF06654

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
