Description of the workplace

The PhD position is within the Quantum Information Theory group led by Armin Tavakoli. The group includes both PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. The group conducts theoretical research broadly within quantum information and the foundations of quantum physics and has frequent collaborations with international experimental groups.

The group belongs to the division of Mathematical Physics where between 30 and 40 people work on theoretical research in many branches of quantum physics, such as many-particle systems, open systems, nuclear physics, cold atoms, and ultrafast optics.

Being a doctoral student

As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.

You will be trained in a scientific approach, including critical and analytical thinking, problem-solving, and research ethics. You will have opportunities to work on projects, develop leadership and pedagogical skills, and will be guided by supervisors. Doctoral studies end with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

Subject and project description

  • The doctoral education focuses on quantum information theory, providing both a fundamental understanding of quantum mechanics and its technological applications.
  • Particular emphasis is on high-dimensional quantum systems.
  • Participation in research projects, seminars, conferences, and doctoral courses is expected.
  • Maximum 20% of working time may be spent on teaching or departmental duties. You may serve as a laboratory supervisor and/or exercise supervisor in selected physics courses.

Qualifications

General admission requirements:

  • Awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • Completed courses comprising at least 240 credits (at least 60 at the second cycle), or
  • Acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

Specific admission requirements (Physics):

  • Completed an independent work (e.g., degree project) in a relevant subject comprising at least 30 higher education credits.

Additional requirements:

  • Good ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to cooperate effectively.
  • Very good knowledge of English (spoken and written).

Selection criteria:

  • Courses and thesis project in theoretical physics, with a focus on quantum information theory and analytical/numerical methods for optimization.
  • Demonstrated initiative, structured work, perseverance, and a forward-thinking attitude.
