Position Summary

The Rutgers School of Public Health (SPH) invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Health Behavior, Society and Policy (HBSP). The Department conducts research, teaching, and community engagement in areas including health systems and policy, health economics, behavioral health, aging, mental health, and social determinants of health.

As a key member of the school’s leadership, the Chair will:

  • Steer departmental strategy, mission, and growth.

  • Mentor and recruit diverse, high-performing faculty.

  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Support excellence in research, pedagogy, and community engagement.

  • Promote an inclusive, transparent, and equitable departmental culture.

Candidates should demonstrate leadership experience, an entrepreneurial mindset, and strong communication, managerial, and interpersonal skills.

Priority research areas include (but are not limited to):
Substance use (alcohol, tobacco, other drugs) • Sexual & reproductive health • LGBTQ health • Mental health • Social/structural/commercial determinants of health • Health disparities • Public health nutrition • Health communication • Aging & life-course • Public health ethics


Minimum Education & Experience

Candidates must have:

  1. A doctoral degree in public health, health education/health promotion, sociology, psychology, economics, or a related field.

  2. A record suitable for appointment at full professor, including:

    • Sustained collaborative research and peer-reviewed publications

    • Demonstrated extramural funding success

    • Effective mentoring, teaching, and student advising

  3. Leadership and management experience in a university setting

  4. Commitment to interdisciplinary education and translating research to improve population health

Preferred:

  • Board certification or eligibility in Public Health


Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop departmental programs

  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty

  • Manage budgets, planning, and departmental operations

  • Support research excellence and extramural funding growth

  • Engage in strategic planning with SPH leadership

  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice

  • Strengthen community partnerships and external collaborations
