The Opportunity

The Associate Professor/Professor is responsible for contributing to the School’s teaching programs, particularly the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, as well as the Faculty’s research and engagement activities. The appointee is expected to develop and maintain a strong program of individual research and to participate actively in the School’s and Faculty’s research culture, including through the UNSW Centre for Crime, Law and Justice.

Accountabilities

Specific accountabilities for this role include.

Associate Professor (Level D)

  • Conduct research of high quality and emerging international impact, including attainment of competitive government and industry research funding, publication of outcomes in high quality research outlets and demonstrated social engagement and impact.
  • Play a significant role in the leadership of research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research group or team.
  • Provide leadership of the School’s teaching and learning activities through initiation of new course materials and flexible approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Promote high quality learning and teaching, develop and teach undergraduate, postgraduate, and/or research courses in the area of criminology and criminal justice.
  • High quality supervision of honours and postgraduate research projects.
  • Provide leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with industry and the community.
  • Work collaboratively with peers across the Faculty and UNSW in all aspects of academic endeavour and contribute to mentoring of other staff.
  • High level contribution to broad administrative functions in the School and Faculty, course coordination, research centre leadership, attending departmental and/or faculty meetings, involvement in Open days and recruitment activities and play a major role in planning and/or committee work or other duties as requested by the Head of School.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Professor (Level E) - In addition to the above:

  • Maintain a distinguished program of research that makes an internationally recognised contribution to the discipline
  • Lead the design, development and review of education activities and resources, assessment and feedback at the program level, particularly for the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
  • Develop and maintain extensive links nationally and internationally within the discipline, industry, or profession that makes a measurable positive contribution to research, curriculum, student employability and industry professional development requirements.
  • Lead collaborations to secure internal and/or external education funding.
  • Chair and contribute to School, Faculty, University and sector-wide committees, working groups and projects as well as other administrative functions as required.
  • Contribute to national and international dialogues in research, teaching and learning, advancing cooperation, partnership and informing best practice in the sector.
