Professorial Fellowship in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine

University of Bern

For candidates wishing to apply for an Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)

The Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (IBMM) of the University of Bern in Switzerland invites applications from outstanding candidates who look for a host institute to be able to apply by February 1st, 2022 for an Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship at the SNSF. Eccellenza Fellows will be appointed as non-tenure track assistant professors at the University of Bern.

The IBMM is an interdisciplinary institute focusing on the function, structure and pharmacology of membrane proteins such as transporters, ion channels and membrane receptors. Towards these research aims we combine biochemistry, chemical synthesis, chemical biology/analytics, electrophysiology, biophysics, molecular biology, cell biology and structural biology. Within our research we put strong emphasis on the pathophysiological roles of membrane proteins in human diseases. Furthermore, human ex vivo and genetically modified mouse models are applied to study membrane proteins in different diseases, e.g., cancer, cardiac disorders, preeclampsia and neuropsychiatric disorders. The IBMM is the leading house of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) TransCure.

Your profile
  • Strong interest, expertise and research project in the field of membrane proteins.
  • You fulfill the eligibility criteria for an Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship of the SNSF, e.g., you have the Swiss nationality, a Swiss higher education degree or at least 2 years of research activity at a Swiss Research Center. See website from the SNSF for details:
Selection procedure
Applications of candidates will be evaluated by the principal investigators of the IBMM. A small number (2-4) of applicants will be selected and invited for an oral presentation.
Your benefit
An invitation letter and support, e.g., laboratory space and facilities, and administrative support from the IBMM. A second letter of support will be provided – if evaluated positively by the University of Bern – from the vice rectorate for research. These two letters are a prerequisite to apply for an Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship at the SNSF.
Please submit your application until November 8, 2021 by email to as a single PDF file including a short motivation letter, CV, list of publications, two references and a two-page summary of past, current and future research. Please only apply to this call if you fulfill the participation requirements of the SNSF. The IBMM of the University of Bern is an equal opportunity employer and women are strongly encouraged to apply.
