Professorship in Experimental Physics with a focus on Photonic Quantum Communication Systems

Technical University Berlin

Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty II

As part of the federal and state program for the advancement of junior scholars, Technische Universität Berlin, Faculty II - Mathematics and Natural Sciences, currently has a vacancy at the Institute of Solid State Physics, for a

tenure track professorship, remuneration group W1, fixed term, to be continued as a lifetime professorship, remuneration group W2
in "Experimental Physics with a Focus on Photonic Quantum Communication Systems".

This professorship should be seen in the context of Technische Universität Berlin’s goal to recruit and advance junior scholars in the early stage of their career.
The tenure track professorship is initially limited to three years. The position shall be renewed for a further three years conditional upon the postholder’s performance and agreement. After six years, as a rule, a lifelong professorship will be offered conditional upon the fulfillment of the determined evaluation criteria and hiring requirements for a lifelong professorship. Information about the evaluation criteria can be found on Technische Universität Berlin’s website, quick access 195779 (https://www.naturwissenschaften.tu-berlin.de/menue/service/berufungen/parameter/en/).

Working field:

Internationally excellent research in photonic quantum networks and quantum communication, development of practical nanophotonic quantum devices, implementation of quantum key distribution protocols using non-classical light sources in free-space and fiber-coupled quantum channels, implementation of the quantum repeater protocol. The development of curricula, the participation in collaborative research and the academic administration are part of the assignment.

Requirements:

The candidate must fulfil the hiring requirements pursuant to Section 102c Berlin State Higher Education Act in combination with Section 102a Berlin State Higher Education Act. Of particular importance are a university degree in Physics or a related subject, demonstrated, as a rule, by an outstanding doctorate in Physics as well as teaching skills demonstrated by a teaching portfolio (for further information about the portfolio, see Technische Universität Berlin’s website, quick access 144242).
We are looking for a scientist with internationally recognized scientific achievements in nanophotonics and photonic quantum technologies. We expect efficient collaborations with other research groups at the Technical University of Berlin, the ability to lead a research team, and to manage complex projects. Experience in acquiring third party funding is welcomed.

The applicant should have extensive competence and experience in at least three of the following research areas:
  • Semiconductor nanophotonics
  • Quantum light sources
  • Quantum memories
  • Implementation of quantum key distribution protocols
  • Semiconductor and/or solid state quantum optics
  • Single-photon frequency and bandwidth conversion
  • Glass-fiber technology

TU Berlin expects from its professors the ability to take responsibility for leadership and strategic development of their research group and their employees. That includes activities in promoting junior and female researchers, gender and diversity competencies in the sense of diversity sensitive working and study conditions, substantial impulses in research and teaching as well as contribution to academic administration. Interdisciplinary cooperations, initiatives in science communication as well as science and technology transfer are very welcome. As university with an international profile, we expect good knowledge of the English language. Non-German speaking applicants are explicitly welcome while expected to learn German quickly.

How to apply:

Technische Universität Berlin is determined to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore strongly encourages qualified female researchers to apply. Qualified individuals with disabilities will be favored.
Technische Universität Berlin offers its tenure track professors structured mentoring to support their professional development. The university values the diversity of its members and is committed to equality of opportunity. It is a certified family-friendly university and its Dual Career Service can assist you and your family with your move to Berlin.
