Overview:

The Blizard Institute

Centre for Cell Biology & Cutaneous Research

Post title: Post-Doctoral Research Assistant

Post ref:  QMUL24329

About the Role

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research assistant within the Centre for Cell Biology & Cutaneous Research at Barts and the London School of Medicine. The Blizard Institute at Barts and The London School of Medicine (part of Queen Mary University of London, QMUL) has an international reputation for excellence in fundamental, translational, and clinical research. Dr Biddle’s group work to understand the lineage plasticity that drives tumour metastasis and therapeutic resistance in oral squamous cell carcinoma. The post-holder will use single cell RNAseq and CRISPR technology to identify and manipulate key molecular pathways controlling the ability to produce metastatic cancer stem cells. They will then investigate the effect of manipulating these pathways on tumour metastasis using advanced tissue culture and human tissue models, including a metastasis-on-a-chip microfluidic device. This fits within our overall aim of developing better treatments for metastatic cancer through understanding cancer stem cells.

About You

Experience in cell culture and molecular biology/RNA analysis is essential. Further expertise in at least some of the following techniques would be ideal, but we are particularly looking for drive and potential:

  • Computational biology and working with large datasets.
  • Multi-colour immunofluorescence and image analysis.
  • Working with 3D cell culture models.
  • Flow cytometry and cell sorting.
  • CRISPR/Cas9 technology and genetic screening.
  • Single cell RNAseq.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities including an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.

The post is based at the Whitechapel Campus in London. This is a full-time post for 3 years with a possibility to extend beyond this. Salary will be on the QMUL research scale (Grade 4), starting at £34,220 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes.
