The SUTD-MIT International Design Centre (IDC) is a leading global hub for innovation-ready design research, science and practice. The mission of the IDC is to drive design research and innovation, in collaboration with a wide spectrum of global enterprise, government and social stakeholders. Specifically, it is defined by the following three core objectives: Advancing design theory and methodology, using Design to address key societal challenges, and integrating design theory and methods with design practice.

We are looking for a Research Assistant to join our multi-disciplinary team of researchers and work on a project to seeks to advance SUTD’s approach in building up capabilities and experiences in Design, and to improve teaching and student experiences in design education. As part of the project, we seek to develop (1) a signature pedagogy for education in a design & technology university, with focus on coherence, links between courses and progression pathways, (2) Next-Gen Design Education framework, to create a new generation of technically-grounded Designers and Innovators who are able to harness the latest technological developments in solving complex socio-technical problems in a sustainable manner.

Responsibilities and tasks

The candidate’s responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:  

  • Support the design, development and execution of research activities, such as data collection involving surveys, interviews and focus groups,
  • Conduct literature searches and review,
  • Manage research data and keep up-to-date research records,
  • Qualitative & quantitative data analysis,
  • Support in research dissemination, including reports, presentations, conference papers and articles in peer-reviewed international journals,
  • Perform other assignments as determined by the Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigators

The candidate will be working closely with the PI, the postdoctoral research fellow in the project, collaborators in SUTD & and researchers in related projects. The Research Assistant would be expected to take an active role in the day-to-day running of assigned project/s, including coordinating and attending project meetings, assisting with content development; engage in presentations; be involved in the co-organisation of workshops and other events related to the assigned project/s; and contribute to the successful completion of project deliverables. He/she will work independently and in collaboration with a project team and the principal investigator (PI) of the project.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor/Masters degree related to Engineering/ Design and/or education
  • Prior working experience in research projects and familiarity with research methods, such as assessment, observation study, interview and/or survey will be advantageous
  • Working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative data analysis software will be advantageous
  • Working knowledge of Design methods will be advantageous
  • Outstanding research and analytical skills
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team and collaborate with colleagues at all levels.
  • Good writing, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
