Job summary

An exciting new opportunity has arisen in the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis to join an inter-disciplinary project exploring strategies for malaria eradication.

The project, funded by The Wellcome Trust, aims i) to determine optimal resource allocation strategies to achieve malaria eradication; ii) to explore the trade-off between country priorities and regional and global strategies; and iii) to understand how the success of strategies are influenced by the wider political economy.

The Medical Research Council (MRC) Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis is an international resource and centre of excellence for research and capacity building on the epidemiological analysis and modelling of infectious diseases. The Centre works closely with national and international agencies to support policy planning and response operations against infectious disease threats.

Candidates should hold a PhD (for appointment to Research Associate) or a Master’s level qualification (for appointment to Research Assistant) or equivalent in one of the following areas: economics, welfare economics, macro-economics, health economics, political economy, public economics/finance, or a similarly quantitative field of economics.

Duties and responsibilities

 


    • You will undertake and lead on economic research to address the aims of the grant, working within an inter-disciplinary team (also including other economists, epidemiologists, mathematical modellers & a research software engineer).

    • The research will address the overall project questions using a combination of economic theory and econometric analyses, epidemiological data analysis, and mathematical modelling. In addition to the specific research questions.

    • You will work with a wider network of collaborators from within Imperial College, with external research organisations and with global health partners including WHO and The Global Fund.

Essential requirements

 


    • Hold an MSc (for appointment at Research Assistant) or PhD or equivalent (for appointment at Research Associate) in one of the following areas: economics, welfare economics, macro-economics, health economics, political economy, public economics/finance, or a similarly quantitative field of economics

    • Experience in applied quantitative economics analyses

    • Knowledge of a programming language such as R, STATA or Matlab

    • Have a record of publication in scientific journals

    • Proven research skills

    • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication

    • Ability to collate data, interpret and present results to a high standard using a range of specialised research techniques

    • Ability to work independently but also as part of a larger interdisciplinary team

    • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision

    • Excellent organisational skills

    • A meticulous approach and attention to detail

The post is full time and fixed term for 2 years in the first instance. Imperial College is supportive of flexible working. The College is happy to discuss the possibility of implementing such arrangements for this post, with suitably qualified people, subject to operational requirements.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
