About This Opportunity

A high-regarded position has become available to work with Associate Professor Timothy Mercer conducting Molecular Biology research, including the operation of high-throughput sequencing on a cutting-edge platform. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Extracting high-quality Nucleic Acids from a range of sample types, and evaluating their quality and concentration.
  • Conducting basic molecular biology techniques such as Molecular Cloning, PCR and Sanger Sequencing.
  • Preparing DNA and cDNA libraries for Oxford Nanopore sequencing.
  • Preparing laboratory chemical stocks such as buffers, media and chemical aliquots.
  • Attending to Laboratory record-keeping systems, including Electronic Lab Notebooks.
  • Managing the receipt, shipping and tracking of biological samples both within our facility and between facilities.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful for this position, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Completion of a Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) in molecular biology, biochemistry, genomics, cell biology or related field.
  • At least 2 years experience working in a Molecular Biology laboratory.
  • Experience conducting standard Molecular Biology techniques such as Nucleic Acid preparations, Molecular Cloning, PCR and Sanger sequencing.
  • The ability to accurately follow laboratory protocols and contribute to troubleshooting.
  • The ability to work on multiple parallel projects, maintaining a high attention to detail for each.

Experience in preparing Next Generation Sequencing libraries, and experience with Laboratory record-keeping systems, are desirable but not essential.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 2 years at HEW level 6.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $80,784 - $86,768, plus super of up to 17% (the total FTE package will be in the range $94,517 - $101,519 ).
