Project “Re-thinking design spaces for composite structures”

We are looking for a BSc or MSc holder in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Systems or similar.  The successful candidate will work closely with a team of individuals from various branches of engineering. The candidate profile should include the following characteristics:

  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary environments (compulsory)
  • Ability to code (compulsory)
  • Some theoretical knowledge in composite materials
  • An awareness of composites manufacturing processes
  • An awareness of industrial processes for maintenance and manufacturing
  • An awareness of LCA processes

Specific Duties

The successful applicant will have to conduct literature reviews, collect information in an industrial setting to build cost models, contribute to and co-author journal and conference publications, and contribute to coding of our computational tool for the early selection of composite materials. All of these activities will be done individually or in collaboration with other researchers in the project or at participating companies.

Objectives of the Project

The objective of this project is to build a digital design tool (CoDesignIT) to map composite structures multi-dimensional design space, informing the design team on crucial design decisions at an early design phase. This tool will: inform the design team in the selection of the most suitable composite structures for aircraft applications; be based on technical, economic and environmental performance; consider the product’s life-cycle; work in a multidisciplinary and multi-objective optimization scenario.

Academic significance

The current research will contribute to the state-of-the-art in the design of composite structures, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research, multi-scale modelling, life-cycle assessment, cost modelling and design for maintenance and repair.
