Research Assistant I/II in the Faculty of Social Sciences (Ref.: 503781) (to commence on June 1, 2021 for one year)

The appointee will work in the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences research lab (BAScLab) in the Faculty of Social Sciences.  Our newly formed lab is a collaborative space for students and staff to work together on research where BASc students can refine the skills they are acquiring in their courses whilst making a meaningful impact locally and globally.

The main project that the appointee will work on will provide an analysis of what it means to be a ‘HKUer’ - a member of the HKU community.  The challenges of the past two years have tested the relationships between people in our community: between different sub-communities of students and between our students, faculty members and the broader institution.  This project will work with a group of student collaborators, guiding them as they conduct a series of semi-structured interviews with other HKU students.  We will explore how recent events have affected students' perceptions of our/their community and how this affects their daily interactions with their peers, the institution and their learning.  Our aim is to provide our institution and our students and staff with an enriched understanding of the current state of our community and will offer some concrete steps for preserving and enhancing that community.

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or above in Social Work, Mental Health, Psychology, Behavioral Health, Counselling, Sociology or related disciplines.  Experience in undertaking qualitative research is essential. This includes proficiency in qualitative methodologies, particularly qualitative interviewing, textual data management and experience with qualitative data analysis software to support coding, concept mapping and conceptual framework development.  They should have an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Cantonese and Putonghua); good analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills; and the ability to work independently.  Those with experience in undertaking qualitative research are preferred.  He/She is expected to involve in project management, oversee the day-to-day work of our student collaborators, assist in preparation of materials and manuscripts, and perform any other duties as assigned.  Those with lower qualifications and/or less experience may be appointed as Research Assistant II.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.

The University only accepts online application for the above post.  Applicants should apply online and upload a covering letter and an up-to-date CV.  Review of applications will commence as soon as possible and continue until May 15, 2021, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
