Research Assistant/Associate in Regional Industrial Innovation Policy

A Research Assistant/Associate position is available at the Institute for Manufacturing, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. The post holder will undertake independent and collaborative research under the guidance of Dr Eoin O'Sullivan (Centre for Science, Technology & Innovation Policy). The post holderwill carry out research related to economic value creation and capture within regional innovation systems and regionally-clustered industrial value chains.

Particular research themes of interest include:

  • The role of intermediate R&D institutes in supporting regional industrial-innovation capability development
  • Regional technology foresight methods (including technology roadmapping of 'innovation pathways' to regional industrial value capture)
  • Characterisation and benchmarking of regionally-clustered industrial value chain network structures; and policies to attract high value manufacturing

Other tasks will include some or all of the following:

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or collaborative research
  • Write up research work for presentation and publication
  • Manage own research and administrative activities, with guidance if required
  • Communicate complex technical material to academics and policy makers
  • Build external contacts with relevant government stakeholders
  • Plan and manage own research activity in collaboration with others

Qualifications, experience and skills required to perform the role:

  • Has a PhD in industrial economics or other relevant discipline
  • Research experience related to relevant policy topics, e.g.: regional innovation policy, regional industrial strategy, regional technology foresight, manufacturing policy
  • Experience of systematic analysis of policy literature and/or economic policy evidence data
  • Record of publishing in industrial policy-related journals and/or international conferences
  • Experience in mixing and articulating quantitative and qualitative analyses
  • Strong writing skills, including ability to communicate complex concepts to stakeholders

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience). Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £27,116 - £31,406; Research Associate: £33,309 - £40,927

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
