Research Associate / Fellow in Meta-surface Fibre Endoscopes for Cancer Imaging

Cancers that occur deep within the body are difficult to detect and treat due to physical inaccessibility: ovarian cancer has a 50% 5-year survival rate while for pancreatic cancer this is just 1%. To address this, we are developing ultra-thin optical fibre endoscopes that will use nano-structured meta-surfaces to implement advanced imaging modalities for minimally invasive cancer detection. These meta-surfaces comprise nanoscale features that allow tailored control over wavelength, phase, polarisation and spatial structure of light, and will be fabricated at the Nottingham Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre.

We are assembling an interdisciplinary and international team, led by Dr. George Gordon as part of UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, and are looking for a highly motivated, talented and creative PDRA to lead development of this new endoscope technology.  You will be responsible for designing and building a prototype device, including simulating nanostructures, nanofabrication with the assistance of technicians, writing experimental code and imaging samples.

What you should have (essential):

    • A Ph.D. (or nearing completion) in a relevant field of physics/engineering

   • Strong track record of high-quality publications

    • Practical experience with nano- or micro-fabrication techniques (e.g. lithography)

    • Ability to write experimental and data analysis code (Python/MATLAB etc)

What you might have (desirable):

    • Experience with electromagnetic simulation (e.g. COMSOL, Lumerical)

    • Practical knowledge of optical imaging systems, including fibre-optics

The project will be based in the lab of Dr. Gordon (OPTIMlab) in Engineering, which has 3 main research themes: novel optical materials, new hardware and algorithms for optical imaging, and clinical translation (more at

This position will be available from 1st February 2021 for a 2 year fixed term contract with a possibility of an extension subject to funding. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours per week); however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 21.75 hours per week).
