Job Summary
The Research Technician, Associate is an entry-level position focused on building skills in providing husbandry and care to a variety of laboratory animals listed on approved protocols, including but not limited to rodents, rabbits, sheep, swine, horses, cows, and poultry in conventional, barrier, and barn housing.
This position will learn and perform husbandry and health checks for all species on campus, as well as any new species that arrive for future studies. Responsibilities include changing cages and cleaning stalls, using specialized equipment (such as rack washers, bulk autoclaves, steam guns, and skid steers), working with animals exposed to biological, chemical, or radiation hazards, and preparing animal caging components for use in the animal facilities. The role also involves performing other cleaning and maintenance duties as necessary and occasional euthanasia of rodents.
High School Diploma or GED
Two or more years of animal care–related experience
Basic computer and data-entry skills
Basic knowledge of animal care
Strong attention to detail
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Professional communication skills for interaction with all staff (Purdue and non-Purdue)
Valid Driver’s License
Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as required
Physical ability to pull/push large, heavy equipment; move equipment up and down ramps; perform repetitive lifting, turning, bending, and reaching (both high and low)
Ability to be on your feet and moving throughout the day
Ability to enter stalls or caging with large animals (cow, horse, sheep, pig) and work safely in close proximity to them
