The MRC Biostatistics Unit is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions. Our focus is to deliver new analytical and computational strategies based on sound statistical principles for the challenging tasks facing biomedicine and public health.

The Unit is offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and talented post-doctoral scientist with interest in developing and applying methodology to observational cohort datasets, measuring biomarkers and clinical outcomes, in the context of chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis (OA). The post-holder will be part of the groups of Dr Brian Tom and Professor Sylvia Richardson and contribute to research within the PREM (Precision Medicine and Inference for Complex Outcomes) Theme. The post-holder will contribute to the Theme's work on mixture and risk prediction modelling with high-throughput and longitudinal data, and will be instrumental in the statistical contributions of the Unit within the STEp-UP OA collaboration. The STEp-UP OA consortium was set up to determine whether protein levels in the synovial fluid of the knee joint can be used to stratify OA patients, to discover predictors of disease severity or future disease development, and to understand the biological role that synovial proteins (measured using the SomaLogic SomaScan platform) play in disease pathogenesis. The post-holder will be a part of a multi-disciplinary team of STEp-UP OA, led by Professor Tonia Vincent of the Centre for Osteoarthritis Pathogenesis at University of Oxford.

Candidates for this exciting position should have a PhD in statistics or in a relevant quantitative discipline, with experience in modelling longitudinal observational data. Scientific computing and statistical programming skills in R or equivalent statistical programming language are required. Experience of proteomic analysis in the context of human disease would be desirable but is not essential. The ability to work as part of an international multi-disciplinary team and to communicate clearly and effectively are essential.

The Unit is situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, one of the world's most vibrant centres of biomedical research, which includes the University of Cambridge's Clinical School, two major hospitals, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and the world headquarters of Astra Zeneca.
