Research Associate in Biostatistics

The MRC Biostatistics Unit is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions. Our focus is to deliver new analytical and computational strategies based on sound statistical principles for the challenging tasks facing biomedicine and public health.

We are seeking applications for a Research Associate position to work on the MRC grant-funded project 'Looking beyond the mean: what within-person variability can tell us about dementia, cardiovascular disease and cystic fibrosis'.

Statistical inference usually focuses on mean differences in an outcome of interest and on the identification of associated risk factors to gain understanding of biological mechanisms and for use in prediction. However, there is growing interest in looking at within-individual variability, that is, how an individual's function fluctuates, and how such fluctuation could provide enhanced insight into disease risk and progression. Statistical modelling of within-individual variability can address clinical questions concerning e.g. the role of blood pressure variability in cardiovascular disease, and lung function variability in the progression of cystic fibrosis. The post-holder will be working on the development of new models for longitudinal data analysis and joint models with time-to-event data, under the supervision of Dr Jessica Barrett and in collaboration with expert statistical and clinical colleagues.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated biostatistician to work on the development of novel statistical methodology applied to substantive clinical questions. A PhD in statistics (or equivalent experience) and knowledge of longitudinal data analysis and survival analysis is essential for this role. The successful candidate will also demonstrate previous experience of statistical methods development and a creative approach to problem-solving.
