Job description

Job summary

The Department of Chemical Engineering seeks a Research Associate to investigate opportunities for Gas-to-Chemicals technologies in collaboration with Shell plc.

This project is concerned with the evaluation of different processes to convert natural gas into commodity chemicals.  Key processes and technologies already exist and can serve as benchmarks; other routes to transform natural gas into valuable compounds are being investigated. How can we make a decision as to which opportunity to pursue?

Duties and responsibilities

You will lead a project to deliver a high-level screening tool, based on gProms, to evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of potential Gas-to-Chemicals routes.

Dynamic links with an Excel database will allow you to feed catalyst and process information into your gProms model(s). In turn this will allow you to create a Leaderboard of potentially viable processes.

Close collaboration with Shell plc will guarantee a rigorous approach, particularly with respect to economic feasibility.

Your results will guide future research efforts in academia and industry.

Your main duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Development of high level gProms models to assess the technical and economic feasibility of Gas-to-Chemicals processes
  • Creation and maintenance of an Excel database with key process parameters
  • Interaction with researchers and colleagues at Shell plc

Essential requirements

You will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.

We expect competence and knowledge of:

  • gProms modeling environment (essential)
  • principal Gas-to-Chemicals technologies and chemistries
  • general catalytic technologies and processes
  • project management
  • preparation of manuscripts for publication in high impact journals

Further information

*Candidates who haven’t yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 to 39,183.

Please note that Research Associate salary on appointment will be limited to £40,858 based on the available funding.

The post is available as soon as possible for a 12 month period in the first instance.  The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).
