Job summary

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in Design for Circular Consumption in the Home Environment to work on a research project in the areas of engineering design and the circular economy in collaboration with a large multinational consumer goods corporation.

The successful candidate will join the Circular Design Group in the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London. He or she will design and conduct consumer experiments and design studies to: 1) understand how resources such as water and energy are consumed while using home and personal care products; and 2) develop innovations for circular consumption. The scientific objective is to establish a framework and tools for integrated design of consumer goods and home infrastructure and appliances, which support responsible water and energy consumption. The candidate is expected to closely collaborate with the industrial partner and conduct research activities in Imperial and in the premises of the collaborating company.

Duties and responsibilities

    • To research into engineering design for the circular economy and consumer goods (i.e. home and personal care products).
    • To conduct consumer experiments and design studies.
    • To develop a test facility to measure and monitor the usage of water and energy in the home environment.
    • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings.
    • To attend relevant meetings, workshops and conferences as necessary.
    • To closely collaborate with the rest of the group and industrial partner to meet deadlines and produce high-quality deliverables.

Essential requirements

    • A PhD degree in areas related with engineering design, the circular economy and sustainability.

    • Engineering design, circular economy, sustainability 
    • Designing and carrying out consumer experiments and design studies

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 - £39,888 per annum.
