Position Summary

Applications are invited to apply for a postdoctoral research associate position in the Department of Entomology at Michigan State University. Research responsibilities of the associate will be associated with research focusing on Mycobacterium spp. among insect and fish communities of freshwater ecosystems of French Guiana.

The start date for this position is 1 July 2020. The initial appointment is for one year, with potential for renewal for another year based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Required Degree

Doctorate -entomology, ecology, evolutionary biology

Minimum Requirements

  • The candidates must have a Ph.D. in entomology, ecology, evolutionary biology or related field, with evidence of research productivity beyond their graduate research and at least two years of additional postdoctoral experience.
  • The candidate must be fluent in English and French and demonstrated effective written and oral science communication, as the required fieldwork will take place in remote areas of French Guiana and in collaboration with French institutions. In addition, the associate will be required to fluently communicate in English scientific results to both technical and lay audiences in written and presentation formats.
  • Extensive experience and expertise in collecting invertebrates and vertebrates, especially fish, from remote, tropical rainforest aquatic ecosystems that require overnight collecting trips, sleeping outdoors for extended periods of time, and the ability to sample and navigate rivers and wetlands.
  • Willingness and demonstrated success in conducting field research in remote and difficult tropical rainforests that includes sampling from a boat and potentially sleeping in hammocks under outside structures for extended periods of time (e.g., weeks).
  • Demonstrated success working within multinational, multidisciplinary, and multilingual scientific contexts.

Desired Qualifications

  • Expertise in RADseq and other molecular biology approaches to evolutionary questions.
  • Experience conducting research on electric fish communities within an eco-evolutionary context related to disease ecology
  • Experience in eDNA approaches and methods for assessing aquatic invertebrate communities; laboratory experience in DNA extractions, metagenome sequencing, bioinformatic data processing, and associated multivariate statistics and machine learning modeling.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with large datasets.
  • Interest and experience with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Certification in wilderness first aid.
