Research Associate: quantitative evaluation of the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy ('sugar tax')

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and talented post-doctoral Research Associate with advanced quantitative and statistical skills to contribute to a project evaluating the diet and health impacts of the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy (SDIL).

The successful candidate will work with Dr Jean Adams on key quantitative components of the project. The whole project is led by Prof Martin White and involves colleagues from the Universities of Oxford, Exeter and Bath, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to an important national evaluation and join an internationally recognised team delivering high profile, policy-relevant results. The post is available for 18 months in the first instance with the possibility of extension, dependant on external funding applications.

You will contribute to assessing the impacts of the SDIL on these outcomes using natural experimental approaches:

  • Purchases of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) and other drinks, using data from Kantar WorldPanel
  • The prevalence of childhood obesity and the incidence of hospital admissions for severe dental caries, using data from the National Child Measurement Programme and Hospital Episodes Statistics.
  • Consumption of SSBs and other drinks, using data from the National Diet & Nutrition Survey

You will develop detailed analysis plans for your work, access relevant data, perform analyses using appropriate statistical methods, prepare manuscripts and disseminate results, and contribute to other aspects of the project and running of the department as required.
