Role Description

Department

The Department of Health Sciences is looking to appoint 2 Research Fellows to contribute to our exciting new UK Prevention Research Partnership (UKPRP) ActEarly City Collaboratory. ActEarly has a vision to promote a healthier, fairer future for children living in deprived areas through a focus on improving environments that can influence health and life chances. https://actearly.org.uk/


In role 1 you will contribute to the Healthy Livelihoods theme, helping to co-design, implement and test prevention solutions to improve the livelihoods of families, children and young adults, under the supervision of Professor Kate Pickett.


In role 2 you will contribute to the Evaluation theme, bringing well-developed research and analytical capabilities to help test early life upstream prevention solutions, under the supervision of Dr Jane West (BIHR Director of Public Health Research), Professor Kate Pickett and Dr Maria Bryant.


Roles

Both roles will be based predominantly in Bradford with occasional days in York. In Role 1 you will conduct individual and collaborative research projects and assist with literature searches and evidence synthesis, co-production, stakeholder engagement, data management and statistical analysis in support of the Healthy Livelihoods Theme.  In Role 2 you will conduct individual and collaborative research projects and use problem solving and creative thinking to support the evaluation of ActEarly. 


Both roles also require the successful candidate to liaise with field sites, staff, stakeholders, investigators and members of the ActEarly Collaboratory in London and Bradford; and attend relevant meetings and developing research agendas based on healthy livelihoods within ActEarly. The successful candidates will be responsible for writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities; contributing to the identification of possible new areas of research; and contributing to the preparation of research proposals and applications to external bodies.


Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • First degree in health-related area with quantitative training
  • PhD (Role 1 – PhD in social epidemiology or similar discipline of equivalent experience)/ Role 2 – Postgraduate qualification in statistics, research methods or another discipline with a substantial quantitative research element (or equivalent experience))
  • Research experience in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy
  • For both roles, knowledge of health inequalities in relation to health and child well-being and the Bradford public health context is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies including evaluation and statistical methods
  • Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research and writing up research work for publication
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals for own and joint research
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience
  • Competency to present at conferences or exhibit work in appropriate events
  • Commitment to social justice in health and health care
