Job summary

The Mechanics of Infrastructure Materials research group are looking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to work in the EPSRC New Horizons project NanoHMAT. The project, led by Dr Emilio Martínez-Pañeda, aims at exploring high-risk high-gain approaches for developing a new generation of hydrogen embrittlement-resistant materials. The work is done in collaboration with the University of Washington (Prof. Lucas Meza) and the Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia (Prof. James Burns, Dr Zachary Harris). The Research Associate will have access to state-of-the-art equipment for characterising the susceptibility of metals to hydrogen embrittlement, from both mechanical and electrochemical perspectives. This is a fixed term contract of one year in the first instance with the possibility of further extension. The start date is relatively flexible, with a preference for the period February-April 2021

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for conducting a wide variety of experimental tasks, including (but not limited to) mechanical testing, hydrogen electro-permeation, electrochemical charging, thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), SEM and XCT characterisation, and various nanofabrication tasks.

You will also be expected to take part in collaborative work, take part in the activities of the research group, submit publications to reputed journals and liaise with academic collaborators and sponsors.

Essential requirements

You must have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in Materials Science, Mechanics of Materials or a related subject. Also, you should have experience in at least one of the following:

  • Mechanical testing
  • Environmentally assisted fracture testing
  • Temperature-programmed hydrogen desorption
  • Materials characterisation (SEM, XCT)
  • Nanomechanics
  • Coupled deformation-diffusion modelling

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.
