Research Associate in Medicine

University of Cambridge Department of Medicine

Applications are invited from an enthusiastic and motivated Post-doctoral Research Associate to join Dr Murray Clarke's group, based within the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge, and funded by a British Heart Foundation Programme Grant. The Clarke Laboratory ( investigates novel mechanisms that regulate inflammation and the immune system, particularly within the vasculature, which drives diseases such as atherosclerosis and aneurysm.

Our research interests lie in understanding how cell death, activation and senescence influences innate and adaptive immunity, and how this affects cardiovascular disease. Our group has a strong interest in the apical inflammatory cytokine IL-1, and we have identified new molecular mechanisms that control its activation and signalling, and how aberration of these drive immune dysfunction in vivo. We also have a deep interest in how IL-1¿ drives senescent cell-associated inflammation, which is pivotal in multiple diseases. Examples of research include: Burzynski, Immunity. 2019; 50, 1033¿1042; Wiggins, Aging Cell. 2019; 18(3):e12946; Gardner, ATVB. 2015; 35:1963-74; Zhang, Immunity. 2013; 38:285-95.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant biological subject, together with experience in molecular biology, cell biology, and immunology. Familiarity with flow cytometry, primary cell culture and immunoassays would be desirable. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently, are also essential.

We are seeking to recruit at post-doctoral level but we will consider applicants who have recently submitted, or are in the process of submitting, for a PhD degree.
